Frequently asked questions

Everything you need to know about booking a car with niftirent. Still stuck? Reach out any time.

How does booking a car with us work?
Search your cities and dates, choose a real car at one all-in price, and book. The rental company confirms your car in real time, usually within seconds, and your card is charged only once it's confirmed. Your confirmation and voucher arrive by email right away. If the car can't be confirmed, nothing is charged.
When is my card actually charged?
When your car is confirmed, which usually happens within seconds of booking. If the rental company can't confirm it, you're not charged. Anything payable at pick-up (the security bond with standard cover, or extras you choose) is shown before you book.
What's included in the price I see?
The car and the cover shown with that rate, with GST included. The kilometer allowance, fuel policy, cover level, excess and bond are all shown before you book, so the price you see is the price you pay. Optional extras such as a higher cover tier, a second driver or a child seat are added only if you choose them.
Is insurance included when I rent a car?
Yes, every rate includes cover. What varies is the excess - the amount you'd be responsible for if the car is damaged or stolen - and you can reduce it by choosing a higher cover tier at checkout. The cover level and the excess are shown before you book.
What is the excess, and how much is it?
The excess is the most you'd pay toward damage or theft, and on our cars the standard excess is $5,500 for smaller vehicles or $6,600 for larger ones. It's not money taken from your card; it only applies if something happens. A higher cover tier reduces it to $550 (or $1,000 for the 12-seater), and the top tier brings it to $0 and adds windshield and tire cover.
What deposit is held on my card, and is it charged?
With standard cover, a A$1,000 security bond is pre-authorized at pickup on a credit card or Visa/Mastercard debit card in the main driver's name, and released after you return the car. It's held, not charged, though it can take a few days to clear back to your card. Cash and prepaid cards aren't accepted for the bond. With zero excess there's no bond. The bond is separate from the excess and much smaller than it.
How old do I need to be to rent a car?
Twenty-one for most of our cars, and 25 for our electric, premium and elite cars and the 12-seater. Drivers under 25 pay a young-driver surcharge of $16.50 a day, and provisional license holders aged 21 to 24 need to have held their license for at least 12 months. Learner licenses aren't accepted.
Are your rental cars automatic or manual?
All of our cars are automatic. There's nothing to select and nothing to check - every car you see is an automatic, which visitors from the US, UK and elsewhere often ask about.
What do I need to bring to pick up the car?
A valid driver's license and, with standard cover, a card in the main driver's name for the bond (no bond with zero excess). Credit cards and Visa or Mastercard debit cards are accepted; prepaid and virtual cards are not. There is no card payment surcharge on any accepted card (credit or debit). If your license isn't in English, bring an International Driving Permit or an official English translation alongside it - you arrange an IDP in your home country before you travel, through your national motoring body (for example the AAA in the US, or the AA or RAC in the UK). Anything else required is shown on your booking before you pay.
What is the fuel policy?
Full to full. You collect the car with a full tank and return it full, so you only pay for the fuel you use. If it comes back short, refueling is charged at $5.50 a litre. Electric cars are supplied with at least 80% charge and should come back with at least 20%, or a $16.50 charging fee applies.
How many kilometers are included?
Unlimited kilometers on nearly every car. The exceptions are the 12-seater, which is capped at 200 km a day (extra at $0.33/km), and the Northern Territory, where the smaller cars get 100 km a day (200 for larger) at the same $0.33/km. Your exact allowance is shown on each rate before you book.
Can I pick up in one city and drop off in another?
Yes, one-way trips between our cities are welcome. Just choose different pickup and return cities when you search. Any one-way fee depends on the route and is quoted on your booking before you book, so there's never a surprise at the counter.
Can I change or cancel my booking?
To change your dates, times, car or location, contact us and we'll arrange it with the rental company for you. The price may change with the new details, and we'll confirm it with you before anything changes. To cancel: free up to 7 days before pick-up; 3–7 days before, a fee equal to three rental days applies; within 3 days of pick-up (or if you don't show), the booking isn't refundable. You can cancel from your booking page or by contacting us.
Who can I contact if I need help?
A real person looks after every booking. Reach us any time before, during or after your rental, and we'll sort it out with the supplier for you.
