Does my credit card cover a rental car in Australia?
It might, but only your card's terms can tell you. Many US and Canadian credit cards include damage and theft cover for rental cars, and it often works abroad. Whether it works in Australia, for the car you've picked and the length of your trip, depends on your card's benefit terms. Call the number on the back of your card or read your benefits guide before you go.
Here's how it fits with an Australian rental: every rate we show already includes damage and theft cover with a deductible (called the excess in Australia). A card benefit usually helps with that deductible, not instead of the basic cover.
How rental cover works in Australia
- Basic cover is in the price. Every rate we show includes damage and theft cover. What changes is the deductible: the most you'd pay if the car is damaged or stolen.
- Standard cover comes with a deductible of est. US$3,800 (A$5,500) to est. US$4,600 (A$6,600), depending on the car. You only pay it if something happens.
- Zero deductible brings that to zero. Windshield and tires included. An A$1 (est. US$0.69) check on your credit card at pickup covers tolls and fines.
- The security deposit is separate. An est. US$690 (A$1,000) security deposit is held on the main driver's credit card at pickup and released after you return the car. It's a hold, not a charge.
- You see the deductible, any hold at pickup and the total for your exact car before you pay.
What to check on your card (5 questions)
Ask your card's benefits line these, word for word if you like:
- Does my rental car benefit cover Australia? Some card benefits leave out certain countries, and some treat countries where basic cover is built into the rate differently.
- Will it pay the deductible if the rental company already includes basic cover? In Australia you can't take the basic cover out of the rate, so ask how your benefit works alongside it.
- Do I have to decline the rental company's extra cover? Many benefits only apply if you turn down the rental company's own damage waiver. If yours does, ask whether choosing zero deductible would cancel your card cover.
- Is my car type covered? Benefits often leave out pickups (utes), large passenger vans (often over 8 seats), off-road use and high-value cars. Ask about the exact car you're booking.
- How long can I rent? Many benefits stop after a set number of days in a row (often about a month abroad; some Canadian cards allow longer). A longer rental can mean no cover at all, not just for the extra days.
Also ask: does it count if I pay through a booking site? Most benefits need the rental paid with that card, in the cardholder's name, with the cardholder as the main driver.
The practical details
- You'll need a credit card in the main driver's name at pickup. Prepaid and virtual cards aren't accepted.
- US travelers pay in US$, Canadian travelers in C$, locked in when you book, with no card fee from us.
- Your available credit needs to cover any hold at pickup on top of anything else you've charged.
Common pitfalls
- Expecting it to cover injury or other people's property. Card benefits generally cover the rental car itself, not injuries, medical costs or damage to someone else's car or property.
- Expecting it to cover your belongings. Things stolen from the car usually fall under travel or home insurance, if anything.
- Expecting nothing to be charged up front. If something happens, the rental company usually charges the deductible to your card first. You claim it back from your card's benefit afterward, with the paperwork it asks for.
Our recommendation
- Rely on your card: book standard cover, keep your card's claim steps handy, and know the deductible could be charged to your card before you're reimbursed.
- Skip the paperwork: choose zero deductible at checkout. Nothing to claim back if something happens.
- Both are fine. It comes down to your card's terms and how much paperwork you'd want to deal with on vacation.
