Deposit & bond
How much is the deposit (bond) to rent a car in Australia?
The security deposit - often called a bond - is typically around $1,000 AUD. It's held, not charged: a pre-authorization is placed on the main driver's card at pickup and released after you return the car in good order. It's separate from, and much smaller than, the damage excess. With our zero-excess cover there's no bond at all.
The practical details
- The deposit is a temporary hold to cover the excess and any charges like tolls or fuel. Your money isn't taken - the amount is simply reserved on your card, so make sure your available credit covers it.
- It's placed on a card in the main driver's name. With our supplier that can be a credit card or a Visa/Mastercard debit card; cash, prepaid and virtual cards aren't accepted for the bond. Other companies can be stricter - many accept credit cards only.
- The exact hold depends on the vehicle and coverage you choose - a larger vehicle or a higher-excess tier can mean a larger bond. The figure that applies to your car is shown on your booking before you pay.
- After you return the car undamaged, the hold is released. How quickly it clears is up to your bank, not the rental company - usually a few business days.
Common pitfalls
- Confusing the deposit (a hold, ~$1,000, always released) with the excess (the most you'd owe only if the car is damaged). They're two different numbers.
- Turning up with only cash or a prepaid card - the bond needs a credit card or Visa/Mastercard debit card in the driver's name.
- Not leaving enough available credit on the card for the hold on top of the rental cost.
Our recommendation
- Bring a credit card or Visa/Mastercard debit card in the main driver's name with at least ~$1,000 AUD available for the hold - or choose zero-excess cover, which needs no bond.
- Choose a higher coverage tier if you'd rather lower the excess (and the risk the bond covers).
- Check the exact bond on your booking summary - it's always shown before payment.

How much is the deposit to rent a car in Australia?
Typically around $1,000 AUD, held (not charged) on the main driver's card at pickup and released after you return the car. With our zero-excess cover there's no bond. The exact amount is shown on your booking.
Is the rental deposit charged to my card?
No - it's a hold, not a charge. The amount is reserved on your credit card and released after the car is returned in good order, usually within a few business days.
Can I pay the deposit with a debit card?
With our supplier, yes - a Visa or Mastercard debit card in the main driver's name is accepted for the bond, as is a credit card. Cash, prepaid and virtual cards aren't. Other companies may accept credit cards only.
Is the deposit the same as the excess?
No. The deposit is a refundable hold (~$1,000). The excess is the most you'd pay toward damage or theft, and only if something happens - you can reduce it at checkout.
