What is the fuel policy on a rental car in Australia?
Every niftirent car is full to full. You collect it with a full tank and return it full, so you only pay for the fuel you actually use. The fuel policy is shown on every rate before you book, along with what happens if the car comes back short.
The practical details
- Full to full means the tank is full at pickup and should be full at return. You pay the fuel station directly as you go, at the normal pump price.
- If the car comes back short, refueling is charged at A$5.50 a liter, which is well above pump prices. Filling up yourself is almost always cheaper.
- Electric cars are supplied with at least 80% charge and should come back with at least 20%, or a A$16.50 charging fee applies.
- In Australia, gas is called “petrol” and is sold by the liter. Most rental cars take regular unleaded; utes and larger 4WDs often take diesel. Check the label inside the fuel door before you fill up.
- Many stations are pay-inside: fill up first, then pay at the counter with the pump number.
Common pitfalls
- Leaving the refuel to the last minute. Find a station near the return location the day before, especially before an early flight.
- Putting the wrong fuel in. Diesel and unleaded pumps sit side by side; the label in the fuel door tells you which.
- Underestimating outback distances. Remote roadhouse fuel costs more and stations can be far apart, so fill up often on long legs.
