Car rental in Slovenia

Renting a car in Slovenia: what US and Canadian drivers need to know

In Slovenia, motorways need an e-vignette linked to the car's plate; cars rented in Slovenia usually have one, so ask at pickup. Headlights stay on day and night. Winter equipment is required from November 15 to March 15, and outside those dates in wintry conditions. Distances are short: Ljubljana to Lake Bled is about 55 km, under an hour.

Which car for Slovenia

A compact car is perfect for Slovenia's short distances and mountain roads. Manual is common, so ask for an automatic early. From November 15 to March 15, your car needs winter tires, or summer tires with chains on board. Rentals are usually winter-ready, but ask.

License and IDP

Bring your home license plus an International Driving Permit: both are required. Carry your passport too.

The e-vignette

Motorways and expressways need one; it's electronic and tied to the plate; check it's valid for your dates. Driving on into Austria, Italy or Croatia: each has its own toll system.

Rules that surprise visitors

  • Headlights on at all times.
  • Speeds in km/h: 130 motorways, 110 expressways, 90 open roads, 50 in towns.
  • Winter equipment from November 15 to March 15, and outside those dates in wintry conditions.
  • Alcohol: the limit is 0.05% (0.5 g/l), and zero for drivers under 21 and anyone with less than two years of driving.

Mountain roads

The Vršič Pass has about 50 hairpin bends. It's usually closed in winter and opens once the snow clears, typically late spring to autumn, so check road conditions before you go.

Ljubljana

The old town center is largely car-free; park in a garage or park-and-ride and walk in.

Lake Bled and Bohinj

Parking near the lake fills fast in summer and is paid; arrive early.

Ages

Minimum age and young-driver fees vary by rental company.

Road trips

  • Ljubljana to Lake Bled (about 55 km, 45 min).
  • Bled to the Soča Valley over the Vršič Pass (about 90 km, 2-2.5 h, summer only).
  • Ljubljana to Piran on the coast (about 120 km, 1.5 h).
  • Slovenia and Croatia: Ljubljana to Plitvice Lakes (about 220 km, 3 h or more, border crossing).
