Zero deductible car rental in Australia

Short answer

Zero deductible cover takes the most you'd pay if the car is damaged or stolen (your deductible; Australians call it the excess) from up to A$6,600 (est. US$4,600) down to zero, on every car except the 12-seater. With it there's no A$1,000 (est. US$700) bond on your card, just an A$1 check.

A collision with an animal on a sealed road is covered like any other damage: US$0 with zero deductible.

Which cars

  • Standard cover's deductible is A$5,500 (est. US$3,850) for economy and compact cars and intermediate hatchbacks and sedans.
  • A$6,600 (est. US$4,600) for SUVs, full-size and electric cars, utes and people movers.
  • Zero cover is offered on every car except the 12-seater, which comes with standard cover only. Need 12 seats with zero cover? Two smaller cars can each have it.

When it's worth it

Long drives, city parking, unfamiliar roads, or simply not wanting a big hold on your card. Compare both prices for your trip and choose.

Your credit card or travel insurance may cover rental damage, and terms vary. Check with your card issuer or insurer before you travel.

You still need a credit card in the main driver's name for the A$1 check. Cash and prepaid cards aren't accepted.

Quick answers

Is there still a bond?
No A$1,000 (est. US$700) bond, just an A$1 check on a credit card in the main driver's name.
Is excess the same as a deductible?
Yes. Australia, New Zealand, the UK and Ireland say excess; the US and Canada say deductible.
Does zero deductible mean I pay nothing if there's damage?
It takes your deductible for damage and theft to A$0. No cover applies when the rental terms are broken, for example driving on unsealed roads without the rental company's written OK. Zero cover is offered on every car except the 12-seater.
Can I add zero cover after booking?
Yes, by message. We rebook your trip with zero cover at the current price and you pay only the difference. No change fees from us.
Is hitting a kangaroo covered?
Yes, on a sealed road, at any hour you're allowed to drive: US$0 with zero deductible, up to your deductible with standard cover. The usual exclusions still apply, and the rental company advises avoiding night driving where you can because of wildlife.
