When is the best time for a road trip in Australia?
It depends on the region. Australia is large and its seasons are flipped from the northern hemisphere: summer is December to February, winter is June to August. As a rule, the south (Sydney, Melbourne, Tasmania, the Great Ocean Road) is best in spring and autumn, while the tropical north (Cairns, the Top End) is best in the dry winter months.

- Southern Australia, including Sydney, Melbourne, Adelaide and Tasmania, is at its best in spring (September to November) and autumn (March to May): warm days, cooler nights and thinner crowds. Summer is peak season and school holidays, so book earlier and expect higher demand.
- The tropical north, including Cairns, Darwin and the Kimberley, is best in the dry season, roughly May to October, when it is warm, sunny and safest to drive. The wet season, from November to April, brings heat, humidity and road closures from flooding.
- The Red Centre around Uluru is far more comfortable from autumn to spring than in the extreme summer heat.
- Distances are large whenever you go, so plan realistic daily drives, and consider picking up in one city and dropping off in another to avoid backtracking.

- Assuming the whole country shares one season. The north and south are often at their best at opposite times of year.
- Driving remote northern routes in the wet season, when roads can close with little warning.
- Underestimating summer school-holiday demand in the south, when popular cars go early.
