Do I need an International Driving Permit to rent a car in Australia?
Usually no. If your driver's license is written in English, you can rent and drive in Australia on that license alone - no International Driving Permit (IDP) needed. If your license is not in English, you must carry an IDP or a certified English translation alongside it.
The practical details
- Australia recognises a valid overseas license for short visits. What matters is the language: licenses issued in English (the United States, the UK, Ireland, New Zealand, most of Canada) are accepted as-is at pickup.
- If your license is in another language - or isn't in the Latin alphabet - bring an IDP (which is just an official translation of your existing license) or a certified English translation. You still carry your home license too; the IDP is never valid on its own.
- You must hold a full license (not a learner or provisional permit), and every person who will drive must be named on the booking and present their own license at pickup.
Common pitfalls
- Assuming an IDP replaces your license - it doesn't. It's only ever carried with the original.
- Getting the IDP after you land. An IDP can only be issued in the country that issued your license, before you travel - you can't obtain one in Australia.
- Forgetting that the name on the license, the booking and the payment card should match the main driver.
