Can a US citizen rent a car in Australia?

Short answer

Yes. If you're 21 or older with a valid US driver's license, a credit card in your name and your passport, you can rent a car in Australia, and you usually don't need an International Driving Permit because your license is in English.

Here's everything else that's different from renting at home.

What to bring to the counter

  • Your US driver's license: valid, full (not a learner's permit), and in your name. Bring your physical license card.
  • Your passport as ID.
  • A credit card in the main driver's name. Prepaid and virtual cards aren't accepted.
  • An IDP is optional. It's a translation of your license, so with an English-language US license it's usually not required. It's inexpensive (from AAA in the US) and a few situations ask for one. More: Do I need an IDP in Australia?
  • Staying a long time? Each state sets how long a visitor can drive on an overseas license: Austroads lists three months in the Northern Territory and six months in New South Wales and Victoria.

How old do you have to be?

  • 21 is the usual minimum. Some premium and electric cars and the 12-seater minibus need you to be 25.
  • Drivers 21 to 24 pay a young-driver surcharge at pickup (the rental company's fee: A$16.50 (est. US$12) a day). Under 25? Read this

The two money things Americans ask about

  • Bond (a hold, not a charge). With standard cover, A$1,000 (est. US$700) is held on your card at pickup and released after you return the car. With zero-deductible cover, there's no bond, just an A$1 card check.
  • Deductible. Every rate includes damage and theft cover. The deductible is the most you'd pay if something happens; zero-deductible cover takes it to A$0. Do I need extra insurance?
