Choosing a car
What car do I need for an Australia road trip?
Short answer
For two people on sealed roads, a small car or small SUV is plenty; families of 4-5 with luggage are happier in a midsize SUV, and groups of 6-8 need a people mover like the Kia Carnival. A 4WD gives you height and space, not off-road permission: rental cars stay on sealed roads.

Match the car to the route
- Darwin: book an SUV or people mover for 200 km a day included (small cars get 100 km a day). Darwin to Kakadu
- One-way trips: in our check only small cars and SUVs came back one way.
- Electric cars: great in and around cities; on long country drives, plan charging stops before you go.
- Long highway days: a midsize SUV or sedan is more comfortable than the smallest cars.
