Is it easy to drive from Darwin to Kakadu?
Short answer
Yes. In the dry season it's an easy drive: est. 253 km (157 mi) on the sealed Arnhem Highway from Darwin to Jabiru, about 2 h 45 min without stops, and a regular rental car handles it. Jim Jim and Twin Falls are 4WD-only tracks that rental cars can't use, so see them on a tour from Jabiru or Cooinda.

When to go
- Dry season (about May to October): most roads and sites open; the busiest time.
- Wet season (about November to April): heavy rain, and some roads and sites close. Check road reports before you leave.
What to know
- Kilometers: Darwin rentals include 100 km a day in small cars and 200 km a day in SUVs and people movers, shown on your booking. Darwin to Jabiru and back is about 510 km, plus side trips.
- After dark: the rental terms don't allow driving outside towns between sunset and sunrise in the Northern Territory, so plan to arrive before dark.
- Sealed roads only: rental cars can't use unsealed roads or 4WD tracks, and damage there isn't covered. That rules out Jim Jim and Twin Falls (Kakadu) and the Lost City (Litchfield); tours go there in the dry season.
- Park pass: you need a Kakadu park pass to enter; buy it online from the official park site (kakadu.gov.au). Prices have changed this year, so check there.
- Crocodiles: swim only where signs say it's safe.
- Fuel: fill up in Darwin; fuel stops inside the park are few.
- Combine it: add Litchfield (est. 130 km from Darwin, about 1 h 30 min; the Lost City area is off limits in a rental car). A 4-5 day Top End loop runs about 800 km, so book an SUV (200 km a day).
