Can I drive a rental car on unsealed roads in Australia?
Short answer
No. With the rental company we book, rental cars, including 4WDs, can't be driven on unsealed (gravel or dirt) roads, 4WD tracks or beaches without the rental company's written OK, and damage there isn't covered. The famous unsealed spots are reachable by tour.

What “unsealed” means
An unsealed road is gravel, dirt or sand: no asphalt. In Australia that includes many outback roads, national-park access tracks and beach driving. Signs often say “Unsealed road” or “4WD only”.
