How much does it cost to rent a car in New Zealand?
Short answer
The daily rate depends most on the season, the car size and how far ahead you book; summer (December to February) and school holidays cost the most. On top of it, budget for reduced-deductible cover if you want it, a one-way fee if you drop off elsewhere, the Cook Strait ferry if you change islands, fuel, and any tolls.

| Cost | What it is | Where the number comes from |
|---|---|---|
| Daily rate | Car, basic cover, standard deductible | Depends on your dates, the car and the rental company |
| Reduced-deductible cover | Lowers what you'd pay for damage | Optional, per day |
| One-way fee | Dropping off in a different city | Varies by route and company |
| Ferry (Wellington-Picton) | Car + driver fare, or passenger fare if you swap cars | Ferry fare, not a rental price: one way, car + driver from est. NZ$258 (est. US$140), foot passenger from est. NZ$90 (est. US$51); fares vary by sailing (Interislander, checked Oct 28, 2026) |
| Fuel | Petrol 91/95, or diesel | Prices change weekly |
| Diesel road user charges | New Zealand charges diesel vehicles (and EVs) per km instead of a fuel tax; petrol cars don't pay it | Government charge for diesel and electric cars, not a rental price: est. NZ$76 (est. US$43) per 1,000 km (NZTA light-vehicle rate incl. GST, checked Oct 28, 2026); ask whether it's included in your rate |
| Tolls | 3 toll roads, pay online | Toll charge, not a rental price: est. NZ$2.10-2.60 per trip for a car on NZTA's 3 toll roads (checked Oct 28, 2026) |
| Young-driver fee | Drivers under 25 at some companies | Per day |
| Extras | Child seats, extra drivers, snow chains, GPS | Per day or per rental |
How to keep the total down
- Book early for December-February and school holidays.
- Compare one-way against a loop: a loop back to your pickup city often avoids the fee.
- Check what your credit card or travel insurance already covers before you buy extra cover.
- Diesel cars: ask whether road user charges are built into the rate.

What are road user charges?
