New Zealand
New Zealand road trips by rental car
Short answer
New Zealand's best drives are short in distance and long in time. Queenstown to Milford Sound is about 290 km but takes about 4 hours each way. Plan 3-5 hours of driving a day, start the South Island's alpine roads early, and check how your car crosses Cook Strait.

Three classic plans
- North Island in a week: Auckland, Bay of Islands, Waitomo, Rotorua, Taupō, back to Auckland or on to Wellington.
- South Island loop, 10-14 days: Christchurch, Tekapo, Mt Cook, Queenstown, Milford Sound, Wānaka, Haast Pass, Franz Josef, Arthur's Pass, Christchurch.
- Both islands, 2-3 weeks: Auckland to Wellington, ferry to Picton, down the West Coast to Queenstown. One-way: check the fee before you book.
Before you go
- Pick roads your rental terms allow; check road conditions on NZTA's journey planner.
- Daylight: winter days are short in the south; avoid long drives after dark on unfamiliar roads.
- Fuel: fill up before remote stretches (West Coast, Haast Pass, Milford Road).
