Can you take a rental car on the Cook Strait ferry?

Short answer

It depends on the rental company. Some rental companies let the car cross on the Interislander or Bluebridge ferry between Wellington and Picton; others ask you to drop it at the terminal and collect another car on the other side. Either way, ask before you book.

Option 1: the car crosses with you

  • You book a vehicle fare on the ferry (or the rental company arranges it), drive on in Wellington or Picton and drive off about 3.5 hours later.
  • Check: does the rental company allow it, who books the ferry, and is ferry damage covered?

Option 2: swap cars at the terminals

  • Return the car at the Wellington (or Picton) terminal, cross on foot with your bags, and pick up a similar car on the other side.
  • Simpler and often cheaper (a passenger fare is lower than a vehicle fare), but you move your luggage twice.

Before you book, ask

  1. Can the car go on the ferry, or is it a swap?
  2. If it's a swap, is the second car the same size, and where exactly do I collect it?
  3. Who books the ferry, and what happens if it's delayed or cancelled by weather?
  4. Is damage on the ferry covered by the rental cover?

Planning tips

  • Book the ferry early for December-February; summer sailings fill up.
  • Cook Strait can be rough. Build a spare half-day into your plan.
  • Picton is a short drive from Marlborough wine country and about 2 hours from Nelson.

It depends on the rental company. Some let the car cross on the ferry; others ask you to drop it at the terminal and collect another car on the other side. Ask before you book.
If it's a swap, is the second car the same?
Ask the rental company whether the second car is the same size and exactly where you collect it.
Who books the ferry, and what if it's delayed?
Ask who books it and what happens if a sailing is delayed or cancelled by weather; Cook Strait can be rough, so build a spare half-day into your plan.
