What is rental car excess (deductible) in New Zealand?
The deductible is the most you pay if your rental car is damaged or stolen, as long as you've kept to the rental terms. In New Zealand, it's commonly est. NZ$4,000-7,000 (est. US$2,250-3,950) on a standard rental (rental companies' terms we checked, Oct 28, 2026). You can reduce it, often to zero, by buying the rental company's reduced-deductible option. Some damage is excluded either way.

- Your rental includes basic damage and theft cover with a deductible amount, shown before you book.
- At pickup, the rental company usually places a hold on your credit card (the bond). It's released after you return the car undamaged.
- If the car is damaged, you pay up to the deductible, not the full repair bill.
- Buy reduced-deductible cover and that amount, and usually the bond, goes down.
What's often not covered, whatever you buy
- Driving on roads or beaches the rental terms exclude (certain gravel roads, beaches)
- Damage to the underside of the car, or water damage from driving through rivers or floods
- Single-vehicle rollovers in some terms; damage when driving under the influence or breaking the rental terms
- Windshield and tires: included on some options, separate on others. Check yours.
- Your belongings: those are travel insurance, not rental cover.
Credit cards and travel insurance
- Some US and Canadian credit cards cover rental cars abroad, and some exclude New Zealand or certain vehicles. Ask your card: Does it cover New Zealand? Is it primary or secondary? Which vehicles are excluded? How do I claim? How card cover works
- If you rely on card cover, you usually decline the rental company's reduced-deductible option and the full bond stays on your card.
- Some travel insurance policies include "rental vehicle deductible" cover, which pays you back after you've paid the rental company. Check the limit and exclusions.
Excess vs deductible: same thing?
Yes. New Zealanders and Australians say "excess"; Americans and Canadians say "deductible". Glossary
