Is it worth renting a car in Australia?
Yes, for almost any trip outside the big-city centers: the Great Ocean Road, Tasmania, Far North Queensland, Margaret River and the Top End are hard to see well without your own car. If you're only staying in central Sydney or Melbourne, skip the car for those days and pick one up when you leave the city.
Australia is about the size of the lower 48 states, so the smart move for most visitors is fly between regions, then rent a car in each one.
Region by region
| Region | Car worth it? | Why | Starter route |
|---|---|---|---|

| Tasmania | Yes | Small towns, national parks, little public transport | Tasmania loop, est. 834 km, about 10 h 30 min |

Darwin rentals include a daily kilometer limit (shown on your booking); sealed roads only; no driving outside towns after dark. Jim Jim and Twin Falls (Kakadu) and the Lost City (Litchfield) are off limits in a rental car. | Darwin to Kakadu, est. 253 km, about 2 h 45 min |

When a car isn't worth it
- City-center days: parking is expensive and transit is good.
- Very long one-way hops with little time (e.g. Sydney to Cairns, est. 2,410 km, about 27 hours plus stops): fly, then rent.
What makes it easier for Americans
Automatic cars, English-language signs, a US license that's accepted at pickup, and prices in US dollars. Can a US citizen rent a car in Australia?
