Age rules
Is there a maximum age to rent a car in Australia?
Short answer
No. The rental company we book in Australia doesn't set a maximum age: if you're 21 or older with a full, current license (not a learner's or provisional one), you can rent, whether you're 70 or 85. Bring the same things any driver brings: your physical license, your passport and a credit card in your name.

What older travelers ask us
- Do I need a medical certificate? No. The rental terms don't ask for one or set an upper age; you need a full, current license in English (or with an International Driving Permit) and a credit card in your name.
- Can my spouse drive too? Yes: add them as an additional driver at booking (A$11 (est. US$8) a day, capped by the rental company). Every driver must be named on the booking.
- Which car is easiest? An automatic (nearly every rental car in Australia is one), with a higher seat: a small SUV like the MG ZS is easy to get in and out of. Are rental cars automatic?
- Is cover different by age? No. Standard cover has a A$5,500 (est. US$3,850) or A$6,600 (est. US$4,600) deductible depending on the car; zero-deductible cover takes it to A$0. Do I need extra insurance?
Make the first day easy
- Pick up in daylight: our airport depots are a short shuttle ride from the terminal, so you can skip the city center on day one.
- Keep driving days short: 3-4 hours is plenty. Australia driving distances
- In the Northern Territory and Western Australia, the rental terms don't allow driving outside towns between sunset and sunrise, so plan to arrive before dark anyway.
