Car rental in Hungary

Renting a car in Hungary: what US and Canadian drivers need to know

In Hungary, toll motorways and expressways need an e-vignette (e-matrica) tied to the car's plate; cars rented in Hungary usually have one, so ask at pickup. The alcohol limit is zero, and outside towns you drive with dipped headlights or daytime running lights on, even in daylight. Budapest is best seen on foot and by tram, so pick up the car when you leave the city.

Which car for Hungary

A compact car is right for most trips. Manual is common, so ask for an automatic early. Hungary has no general winter tire law, but chains can be required on signed roads in snow or ice. For winter trips, ask for a car with winter tires.

License and IDP

With a US or Canadian license, carry an International Driving Permit along with your license. Carry your passport too.

The e-vignette

Toll motorways and expressways need an e-vignette (e-matrica). It's electronic and tied to the car's plate, with no sticker. Cars rented in Hungary usually have one, so ask at pickup.
