Renting a car in Heraklion and Crete
Crete is big, about 260 km (160 mi) end to end, and a car is the easiest way to see it. Most visitors pick up at Heraklion (HER) or Chania (CHQ). The main north-coast road is busy; mountain and south-coast roads are narrow and slow, and some beach roads are unpaved, which many rental terms don't cover.
Where to pick up
The practical details
- Heraklion (HER) vs Chania (CHQ) pickup; one-way between them (a one-way fee may apply; it's shown before you pay)
- North-coast road and mountain roads (allow extra time)
- Unpaved roads and cover (check your terms)
- Road trips: Heraklion to Chania via Rethymno; Elafonissi and Balos (unpaved access); the Lasithi Plateau
Frequently asked questions
Should I pick up in Heraklion or Chania?
Either works. Heraklion (HER) suits the east and center, Chania (CHQ) the west. If you pick up in one and return in the other, a one-way fee may apply, and if it does, you'll see it before you pay.
How long does it take to drive across Crete?
The island is about 260 km (160 mi) end to end, and mountain roads are slower than the map suggests, so allow extra time.
Can I drive to Balos and Elafonissi?
The access roads are partly unpaved. Check your cover terms for unpaved roads before you go.
Is a small car OK for Crete?
Yes. The north-coast road is good, and a smaller car is easier in villages and on mountain roads.
