What happens if I get caught by a speed camera in a rental car in Australia?

Short answer

The fine goes to the rental company, which can give your details to the issuing authority so the fine is sent to you, and charges a processing fee (A$71.50 (est. US$50) a fine, with the rental company we book). It can arrive weeks after you've flown home, so the easiest fix is to drive at or under the posted limit.

Australia uses a lot of cameras, and visitors are often surprised by them. Here's how it works.

Step by step

  1. A camera records the car's plate. The notice goes to the registered owner: the rental company.
  2. The rental company can give your details to the issuing authority so the fine is sent to you, and charges its processing fee (A$71.50) to your card.
  3. You pay the fine to the state, usually online. Notices can take a few weeks to arrive.

Cameras you'll see

  • Fixed and mobile speed cameras, often signposted.
  • Average-speed (point-to-point) cameras on some highways: they time you between two points.
  • Red-light cameras at intersections.
  • Phone and seatbelt cameras in several states.

Speed limits to know (unless signs say otherwise)

  • 50 km/h (31 mph) in most built-up areas.
  • 40 km/h (25 mph) school zones at set times, and lower in some shopping strips.
  • 100-110 km/h (62-68 mph) on highways; some outback roads in the Northern Territory allow up to 130 km/h (81 mph).

Australia doesn't publish a camera "tolerance", so treat the posted number as the limit.

In the Northern Territory and Western Australia, the rental terms don't allow driving outside towns between sunset and sunrise.

How to avoid one

  • Set your phone's map to show the speed limit.
  • Watch for school-zone signs and times.
  • Slow down at town entries on country drives: limits drop fast.

Tolls are different

Quick answers

Will a speed camera fine follow me home to the US?
Yes, it can. The rental company can give your details to the issuing authority, and the fine is sent to you.
How do I pay an Australian speeding fine from the US?
Online, on the state fine website named on the notice, by the due date. Paying the rental company's processing fee doesn't pay the fine itself.
How much is the rental company's fee for a fine?
With the rental company we book in Australia it's A$71.50 (est. US$50) per fine, on top of the fine itself. Your booking shows the rental company's fees.
How long does a fine take to arrive?
Usually a few weeks after the trip.
Do speed cameras in Australia have a 10% tolerance?
No tolerance is published. Drive to the posted limit.
