Spain is made for driving: uncrowded motorways, dependable sunshine and enormous variety within a few hours - Moorish cities, green northern coast, desert badlands and beach after beach. Driving in Spain
Spain runs two kinds of motorway: tolled AP routes and free A autovías that are usually just as good - the sat-nav will often route you the free way. Distances are long, so plan fuel stops on the emptier central stretches.
Madrid and Barcelona both operate low-emission zones in their centres; as with most European cities, the easy move is to park on the edge and take transit in. Rural driving is relaxed and roads are excellent.
